SOUTH AFRICA BANKS ON CRUISE TOURISM

MSC Cruises says it is considering bringing even larger ships than the Melody and Sinfonia, which currently operate in South African waters. MSC Cruises md, Stefano Virgoriti, was speaking at the release of a new report on cruise tourism in South Africa, which found that its developments as a niche market would enhance South Africa's reputation as a world-class and globally competitive tourism destination. Stefano agrees that cruise tourism will experience growth both in the local and international markets. "We are confident that the challenges we are facing today, mainly due to the insufficient structures in and around the ports aimed at the specific cruise industry needs, will not hamper or stall its momentum, as all stakeholders directly involved will need to work towards achieving the same extraordinary growth that the industry sector is enjoying everywhere else in the world." The global cruise tourism industry has experienced significant growth over the last three decades, expanding from 1,4m passengers carried in 1980 to an estimated 15,4 million by 2009. Speaking at the event, tourism minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, said his department would work with other organisations to address constraints, facilitate passenger transit, encourage cruise passengers to visit port cities and the surrounding areas and ultimately increase economic opportunities for communities in and around coastal cities.

BA BRINGS NEW FIRST CABIN TO SA

The British Airways' new R1bn (£100m) first-class cabin will operate on South African routes in the first quarter of this year, according to regional commercial manager for Africa, Ian Petrie. He says South Africa is a key route for the upgraded, more contemporary product as BA is the only carrier to provide a direct first-class service between South Africa and London. The new first cabin has already been fitted on 12 aircraft and will be rolled out on BA's entire long-haul fleet by the end of the year. Ian says the new First product is more like an intimate private-jet experience". "Each individual suite has its own personal wardrobe, a leather-bound writing desk that converts into a dining table and an improved bed with a wider mattress. The service style is attentive without being overbearing." Other customer service upgrades include mid-air email and text services on UK to US flights and a Smartphone App that allows access to all flight details. Iphone users can download an App to display new mobile boarding passes.

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IMPROVES PARKING

The "pick-up-and-go" area at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has relocated to the ground floor of Parkade 1. A free 30 minutes will be allowed to collect passengers. Thereafter a sharply increasing tariff will apply to deter users from lingering too long in the area. The airport has asked users to arrive 10 minutes after flight arrival time and not well in advance to avoid congestion. The New pick-up area will have flight information display boards. If a flight is significantly delayed, users will have to park in one of the available parking areas. The current drop-off zone remains on top of the elevated road. Meanwhile, passengers departing for an extended period will be able to park in a new secure long stay parking area under shade-nets at a significantly lower rate than the normal shade-net parking area.

BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE - AIR MAURITIUS

Kindly be reminded of the "Checked Baggage" information for travel between South Africa and Mauritius on SA flights only. The following flight series: SA1000, SA7000, SA8000 are excluded:

MORE STRIKE WOES FOR BRITISH AIRWAYS

According to the Unite union, British Airways cabin crew will "strongly" vote in favour of new strikes. Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey, said he hoped the airline would take note of the ballot currently being held and would ultimately try to put an end to the long-running dispute with its cabin crew. However, McCluskey eased fears over the period of the Royal Wedding, saying that no strikes would be called for that time. The current ballot runs until January 21 and should cabin crew vote in favour of a strike, they will have to give the airline at least seven days' notice of such a move.

TALL PASSENGERS GET SHORT END OF THE PLANE

If you're lucky enough (or rich enough) to fly first class, then leg-room and a comfy sleep during the flight is pare for the course. For everyone else, it's a less enjoyable, much less comfortable experience. For those who are over six feet tall, it might be more akin to a nightmare. Recently, a US passenger on a two and a half flight from Chicago to Florida finally had enough and requested to stand the aisle for the duration of the flight. According to a local television station in the US he only used his seat for take-off and landing. The airline has since insisted it does not require its passengers to stand during a flight.
